Leaning from the Steep Slope (1995/2022)  by James Romig (1971) – Velocity control and Complex Rhythms

This piece offers many performance challenges in a short timespan of 76 seconds.  Leaning is a serial composition as well as an introduction to playing rhythms from triplets to nested quintuplets and septuplets. The performer is instructed to choose a separate sound for each of the 4 dynamics (p,mp,mf,f) in the piece. Also, if one performs on the suggested three octave instrument, an octave shift is required so that the work encompasses 5 octaves. By using a visual representation of the keyboard in Ableton, the performer can see where notes are on a shifting keyboard.
